Frequently Asked Questions

1). How do I qualify?

Answer). If you fall within the poverty level in Louisiana, or make too much money to pay a private attorney you will qualify.

2).What type cases do you take?

Answer). Our clinic will not do criminal cases. We will however help with expungements, benefits, employment, landlord disputes, bankruptcy, domestic abuse and mostly civil cases. Get in touch with our office and we will consult on your specific matter.

3) What services do you actually provide on these cases?

Answer). There are no single solution or service that we provide. We understand that no two cases are exactly alike, so the facts of your case determine the best course of action.

4).Do I have to go to church to benefit from Christian Legal Aid’s services

Answer). No, there is no requirement that you attend church or sign a statement of faith. However, Christian Legal Aid seeks to provide holistic assistance to those in need, so we encourage you to engage in other local ministries to address any of your non-legal needs.

5),If I meet the above qualifications (income and case type), will you represent me?

Answer). We are happy to provide an initial consultation to anyone who needs our assistance but cannot guarantee that we will provide representation on your particular case. Please note that neither the information on this website nor the consultation is to be construed as legal advice, and does not form an attorney-client relationship.

6).How does the clinic work? Can I walk in or make an appointment?

Answer). As CLA of NLA is still developing its attorney network, we do not currently host walk-in clinics. Please contact us directly if you have a legal question you’d like to discuss, and try to have access to all relevant documents.

7). I’m an attorney who wants to help, but I’m not sure if I have the time or expertise in these subject areas. What can I do?

Answer) .We are always delighted to partner with Christian attorneys who want to serve their community with their legal skills. There is no particular time commitment that we expect- we simply want to develop a network of motivated legal professionals who can occasionally review facts and cases for needy clients. You do not need to be a subject matter expert to help - your ability to distill and analyze legally significant facts is more than enough. Providing legal aid can be as simple as helping a client understand their rights and obligations, encouraging them to take next steps on their own, making a referral , or, if you choose, providing either partial or full representation.

8). I’d like to help but I’m not an attorney. What can I do?

Answer). There are a number of ways that non-attorneys can be extremely valuable to the clinic. As we develop, there will be opportunities to assist with initial screenings for clinic intake and other administrative tasks. In the meantime, please get the word out about our clinic and the services we provide to the community. We exist to serve those in need, so we want to be top of mind when someone needs help! If you attend church, talk to your pastor about partnering with us, and pray for our ministry. You can also help by providing donations for the clinic’s financial needs, which allows us to continue serving needy clients with no- or low-cost legal assistance. We are a 501(c)(3), so donations are tax deductible.

9).Any other questions? Reach out and ask! We are always happy to help.
